Machine Calligraphy was performed as a workshop at LASALLE college Media Lab within the school of Design Communication in March of 2023 as part of the VCUArts Qatar Graphic Design Research Exchange Program. The workshop was developed and delivered by Levi Hammett as part of xLab. Using a custom built CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) calligraphy machine, participants explored the creative potential that exists between the precision of mechanical motion and the subtle imperfections of traditional calligraphic techniques. Set within the context of post-digital printn1aking, the workshop engaged with the implications that computational design, artificial intelligence, and robotic automation impose on the tradition of hand lettered typography.

The VCUArts Qatar Graphic Design Research Exchange Program (GDREP) was initiated by Astrid Kensinger, chair of the Graphic Design department as an ongoing program of lectures, workshops, and other research activities shared between vcuarts Qatar and other institutions.
